Internet Explorer still continues to enjoy the most used web browser till date in 2011, partly because of it being the default web browser shipped with the most popular operating system of the world, that is Windows.

And this fact of it being the most popular web browser makes it target of the largest attempts of malware attacks. It is the first preference of the malware developers because if they can find a vulnerability or security hole in Internet Explorer, they can spread the malware infection to maximum number of computers. The return over efforts is highest against Internet Explorer.

Most Secured Web Browser of 2011 – Is It Internet Explorer?

Traditionally Internet Explorer has been considered to pose a weak defense against online malware and security threats, when compared to other popular <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/tag/browsers/"title="" >browsers. But the situation is changing very fast. It seems like Microsoft has been working real hard to make Internet Explorer one of the most secured web browser of 2011. At least the latest test results from the reputed research lab NSS shows that.

In Q2 of 2011, NSS Labs performed a test of web browser protection against socially-engineered malware targeting users around the globe.

This NSS Labs report focused on URLs chosen to be of significant threat and followed the same Live Testing methodology as the global tests as was done in their earlier tests.

And the results are startling.

Windows Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) caught an exceptional 99.2% of live threats: 96% with the SmartScreen URL reputation and an additional 3.2% with Application Reputation.

Google Chrome 12 caught 13.2% of the live threats, considerably more than the 3% observed during the Q3 2010 global test. This improvement tracks to an enhancement in SafeBrowsing so that, according to Google, “Chrome now warns you before downloading some types of malicious files”

Apple Safari 5 caught 7.6% of the live threats. Protection offered was near identical to that of Firefox.

Mozilla Firefox 4 caught 7.6% of the live threats, far fewer than Internet Explorer 9. Results were 11.4% less than the 19% protection rate observed in our Q3 2010 global test, indicating an overall drop in protection for Firefox.

Opera 11 caught 6.1% of the live threats, providing considerably less protection against socially-engineered malware than the other browsers tested.

These results speaks a lot about the efforts Microsoft has been putting in making Internet Explorer to be the most secured browser of 2011.

File and folder encryption is a data protection technique, which is known to many people but very few actually use it in...

File and folder encryption is a data protection technique, which is known to many people but very few actually use it in their day to day functioning. And they cite various reasons for it like…

Data encryption and decryption is a cumbersome process and they do not have easy tools for it.

They do not have time to add one more step into their already busy life.

They do not want to add one more <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/tag/passwords/"title="password" >password to remember.

They do not need it as “It” will not happen to them.

Whatever be the reason, but we suggest that you to seriously consider file and folder protection as a habit specially for protecting your sensitive data and information. You never know when you may need it.

In case you are looking for a easy and simple tool for file and folder encryption, then you can try EncryptOnClick. It is a simple <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/tag/freeware/"title="Freeware" >freeware tool, which allows you to encrypt and decrypt your files and folders with a simple click. The user interface is so simple that even a small child can operate it.

There are just boxes – Encrypt and Decrypt with just two options in each box – Files and Folders. Just choose whatever is your requirement and you are done. Simple.

However, this tool has its own weaknesses and demerits. And here they are…

EncryptOnClick quickly and easily locked our files from anyone without the password, but the program wasn’t without its faults. The biggest trouble spot was the fact that once the password is entered and the file is decrypted, it remains open permanently. This means users must physically find the file and set the password each time it is opened. Other downloads keep the file encrypted until told otherwise. Another area where this program didn’t meet the competition is its algorithm for encryption. More-advanced downloads offer a choice for users who wish to select the level of complexity their program is encrypted.

[Download EnrcyptOnClick]

What is a Portable Malware Scanner Malware and virus scanning is a real time requirement. Present day Malware scanners and antivirus software...

What is a Portable Malware Scanner

Malware and virus scanning is a real time requirement. Present day Malware scanners and antivirus software reside in the computer’s active memory and keep a watch on all sorts of suspicious activities and behaviors. They keep on comparing their database signatures with these activities and raise a flag as soon as they find some problems.

But none of them is perfect and despite the use of smartest and latest security and antivirus software, there is always a possibility that your computer gets infected with some sort of malware, which might sneak in penetrating the security wall.

In such cases, you might need something, which is called on-demand virus detection. They are one time virus scanners, which scan your system thoroughly for the presence of the malware and virus and take action accordingly. There are lots of them and you can find a lot of such portable malware scanners covered on this blog as well.

Microsoft Safety Scanner – The Latest Portable Malware Scanner

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

It is a portable malware scanner, which means that you do not need to install it on your machine. You can just download it and run it to scan your system. But you need to have the Administrator rights to use this malware scanner. It has three options like most other virus scanners. It allows you to do a quick scan, a full scan or a custom scan wherein you can select a file or folder to scan. It is about 70 MB is total download size and provides and quick alternative to your requirement of on-demand portable malware scanner.

However one important limitation of this online malware scanner is that this tool is not auto updating and it expires in a time period of 10 days. If you want to use it after 10 days, then you have to download it again and then only you can use it.

[Download Microsoft Safety Scanner - The Portable Malware Scanner]

They are small little scripts, which are downloaded and stored in your browser folders, when you visit many of the websites. The purpose of these cookies is to serve personalized experience to you, based upon your preferences. They help to identify yourself while you are online.

This is only just one side of the story. The fact is that these cookies also serve to the benefits of the advertisers much more than to serve the user. The advertisers, with the help of these cookies, are able to identify a user’s online behavior and thus they are able to serve targeted advertisements, which mint money for them.

Many users make sure to delete these cookies from their <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/tag/browsers/"title="" >browsers on a regular basis to ensure their online <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/tag/privacy/"title="" >privacy protection. Deletion of the cookies is simple and most of the browsers allow you to delete all the cookies with simply a few clicks in your browser settings. Its easy.

But do you know that there are some cookies, which are hard to remove even with your browser settings. We are talking about Flash cookies, sometimes also known as Local Shared Objects, or LSO. They are real hard to get deleted from your systems and browser settings are simply incapable of removing them from your computer. Some of these Flash cookies are also know to re-create the http cookies, soon after you have deleted the http cookies.

How to Ensure Online Privacy Protection from Flash Cookies

If you are a Firefox user, then there is a simple addon, which is specifically developed for this purpose. Better Privacy <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/category/browsers/firefox/"title="Firefox Addon" >Firefox Addon (download link given at the end of this post) just clears the Flash cookies from your system on every browser shutdown. It is a simple install and forget type of script and works silently behind the screen ensuring to clean your system in the background without making any noise.

If you really care for a better online privacy protection then what is provided by usual browser settings, then try Better Privacy Firefox Addon.

Ubee is one of the premium brand of broadband router and modems worldwide. They manufacture some of the popular models of Ubee Modems and routers. In this post, we are going to list some of the popular models of Ubee Modems and their default router <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/tag/passwords/"title="password" >passwords, username and login details.

What are Default Router Passwords

Broadband router manufacturers set up a default username and password within the firmware of their devices. This password and username can easily be changed by the user by simply changing the default settings of the device by connecting it o a computer and using a private IP like <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/192-168-1-1-lost-password-how-to-reset-crack-broadband-router-password/"target="_blank"title="192.168.1.1" >192.168.1.1. In case the user forgets this changed username and password, there usually is a hardware reset button on the backside of the broadband router, which allows the user to change all the settings to the factory defaults and then one can access the settings by accessing it through the <a href="http://defaultpasswords.in/"target="_blank"title="Default Password" >default password.

Web Browser wars are just heating up. It is heartening to see that after a relentless pursuit of making the web browser feature-rich and user-friendly focus is now being made on the security aspects as well. The browser developer companies are giving due considerations to the fact that <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/tag/browsers/"title="" >browsers are the windows to the external world for the users and their ruggedness is the first key to the <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/tag/privacy/"title="" >privacy and <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com"title="PC Security" >PC security of the users.

Internet Explorer 9 is the latest version of the old war-horse from Microsoft which is still under development stage. It is being developed only to run on machines with Vista SP1 and above which means that Windows XP, the most used OS at present, is out of luck.

But this post is about the new and enhanced security features present in the Internet Explorer 9. Here we go…

1. InPrivate Browsing: It seems that private browsing is the order of the day. You can invoke or close it at your will. Once inPrivate browsing is invoked, IE9 stops retaining your browsing history, temporary Internet files, data from online forms, cookies, user names and <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/tag/passwords/"title="password" >passwords.

2. InPrivate Filtering: When you visit a webpage, it is not necessary that all the content is served from that domain only. Lots of content like advertisements, images, scripts, tracking codes etc. is served from other domains and often this is the cause of the malware infections.

InPrivate Filtering feature allows you to decide how much of this third-party content they want to experience. Once it’s enabled, InPrivate Filtering is designed to watch for and block third-party content you frequently find across the websites you visit.

3. Download Manager with SmartScreen filter Integration: SmartScreen is a URL blacklist providing malware and phishing protection. Starting with this version, Microsoft introduced SmartScreen download reputation. SmartScreen download reputation is a browser feature that uses reputation data to remove unnecessary warnings for well-known files, and shows more severe warnings when the download has a higher risk of being malicious. This reduces the problem of having the users ignoring or deactivating these warnings if they appear too often. The download manager also performs some malware checks, digital signature checks, and so on.

4. Domain highlighting: An effective measure against phishing attempts is to look in the address bar for the actual domain name of the URL. Domain highlighting feature in IE9 highlights the domain name for easy identification, which allows users quickly understand the actual address of the website. This reduces the chances of them getting fooled by the look-a-like URLs with the target phishing domain.

5. Cross-Site Scripting Filter: Cross-site scripting is a particularly nasty form of online attack that can jeopardize the personal information of website visitors. In a cross-site scripting attack the attackers inject malicious code into a website. That code can then get the attacker access to page content (even content that was secured behind a users name and password), session cookies and other information maintained by the visitor’s Web browser.

Internet Explorer 9 has a cross-site scripting filter that’s built to detect these cross-site scripting attacks. The filter is turned on by default in Internet Explorer 9; when it finds a harmful script running on a Web page it takes steps to disable the script and keep visitors to the website safe.

Firefox and Google Chrome are my preferences for the web <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/tag/browsers/"title="" >browsers. I love firefox for the loads of <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com/category/browsers/firefox/"title="Firefox Addon" >firefox addons, which allow you to customize and personalize the browser as per your needs. And prefer Chrome when it comes to the speed of browsing. Here Google Chrome is just unbeatable.

Well, the purpose of this post is to introduce to the visitors of <a href="http://thepcsecurity.com"title="PC Security" >PC Security, a Firefox addon, which allows you to run your favorite browser firefox in a sandbox mode. It is a different approach for your computer security. Sandboxing your browser allows you to surf the web, from a virtual area of your main system. Any changes, which are attempted by the downloaded files, scripts and processes running through the browser, are restricted to make any permanent changes to your actual operating system.

If, at any place you want to restore your settings to the previous instance, you can do that with just a few mouse clicks.

The Secure Browser uses virtualization technology to provide a safer web experience to users and organizations. When using the Secure Browser any changes or malicious files inadvertently downloaded from the Internet are contained within the secure browser, keeping the underlying OS and computer secure from hostile changes. Any changes resulting from browser activity may be quickly and easily reset to effectively “undo” such changes and return it to its initially installed state. This makes it much easier to clean a system and bring the user back to full productivity.

Features:

Provides a virtualized and contained Firefox v3.6 Browser with Adobe Reader and Flash plug-ins

Rapidly reset any changes made during normal use back to their initial state, enabling easy recovery from infections or attacks

View statistics related to the number of processes detected and blocked

Set white and black lists to limit access to known good sites, or prevent access to known bad sites to further limit the risk of attack and infection

Here is a nice Youtube video, which displays its important features.
